This store has everything you could possibly need for outdoor recreation -- from basic hiking gear to full-blown mountaineering and climbing supplies. This is the place to go if you need rope, 'beeners, pre-packaged meals, utensils, clothing, sleeping bags, kayaks... you name it. The prices are reasonable and all of their gear is top-notch and should last a lifetime.

If you cannot find the clothing or gear that you need in their Winnipeg location, you can order the item online and it will be shipped to the store for pickup. You can also rent equipment here for very reasonable rates, and if you choose to purchase the model you rent, they will subtract the first day's rental fee from the purchase price.

To buy or rent gear from MEC, you must be a member of the Co-op. A lifetime membership will cost you $5.00.

In 2007 the American chain Cabela's purchased the family-owned S.I.R. Warehouse Sports Store in Winnipeg and began operations in Canada [2]. They offer a good selection of outdoor equipment and hunting gear at very reasonable prices.

They guarantee their equipment for up to 30 days, except for the following items:

  • Ammunition, Powder, Primers, Caps
  • Base Layers/Underwear
  • Food Processing Equipment
  • Mouth Blown Calls
  • Sleeping Bags & Mattresses
  • Socks
  • Swimwear
